Hailey was our very first Havanese and came into our family to help me thru the 'empty nest
syndrome'! She has done a great job with that and is such a sweetheart. She was a gold sable at
birth, but then lightened to more of a lovely off white color. At about 2 yrs old, she started
darkening again and now has a very golden rump and many more gold highlights in her coat.
She has kept the pretty silvering sable in her ears, however.
She is 9.5 inches at the withers and on a good day she weighs about 10 lbs. Hailey 'loves' to eat though and her weight can easily creep up to 12 lbs if we don't watch her carefully.
(I understand, Hailey... believe me!)
She's all girl, being very feminine and dainty.
So much so that she can't stand for her feet to get
damp in the morning dew.
It takes alot of coaxing and stern voice sometimes,
to get her to hop
off the porch into the grass in the mornings! And on rainy days... it's a real challenge to
convince her that she won't melt if her feet get wet in the grass. Hailey is whom we lovingly refer
to as "The Queen Mum." She is very quiet and unassuming, but never forget for a moment that
she is the boss here. No one steals her chew bones or tries to steal any of her food. They don't
even try. They just instinctively know that she won't tolerate it. Our little 'Queen Mum" rarely
barks either. She doesn't need to. The rest of them can do it, while she lounges on the couch
merrily chewing on her chew bone having a perfectly "Hava-nese" day!
She loves to have her belly rubbed but other than that,
she's content just to be beside you,
without having to be on your lap, even if that means she has to scale pet/baby gates to get into
the same room with us. Since she came to live with us at a mere 3 1/2 pounds, not gate could
keep her confined. She's part billy-goat we think, and her daughter Briar has inherited this trait,
as no gate will keep her out either!
Hailey's wonderful company,
and will follow you quietly thru the house
just to be where you
are,
never making any demads, unless of course she knows you're eating something. Then she
stands
on her hind legs like a little circus clown and waves her paws at us in her sweet beg-
ging way.
My
Mother in law, used to say, "Oh Hailey is saying her prayers!" We'd laugh because
we knew if she was doing any praying it was only that she was praying for a bite of our food!
One thing very special about Hailey
is her abilty to say "out". Yes! You read right... she actually
says "ouuuut"
when she wants to go outside.
What a hoot! LOL
The other dogs can't say
it.....
but they sure know what she's saying
and get all excited in anticipation
when they hear
her say it!
